Medical Billing and Coding / Office Management Course Description

The Medical Billing and Coding / Office Management training program focuses on teaching medical terminology, medical front office procedures, how to submit medical claims, insurance reimbursement, managed care procedures, diagnostic coding, and basic human anatomy. This program provides a thorough understanding of all phases of billing and collection procedures for insurance carriers. Students are taught to manage accounts receivables for a medical office including tracing a medical claim, appealing low payments, patient accounts, and preparing an account for collection. The program also includes in-depth training on processing Workers Compensation claims, Personal Injury, Medicare, and Medi-Cal, and additional topics including HIPAA, CMS and OSHA.

The Medical Billing & Coding / Office Management program is divided into seven modules and externship. Students must complete all modules, starting with any module and continuing in sequence until all seven modules are successfully completed. Students participate in an externship only after successfully completing all other academic requirements.

Graduates receive a Medical Insurance Biller / Office Management Diploma upon successful completion of the program.

Externship

Upon completion of their academic requirements, students participate in a 6-8 week externship program with a hospital, clinic, or private billing company. The externship will enable students to have the opportunity to demonstrate and reinforce the knowledge and skills presented and practiced throughout the training program. Students will work under the direct supervision of qualified personnel at the signed externship site. Students must complete their externship training to fulfill graduation requirements.

Occupation and Job Outlook

Job growth in the health care industry continues to expand to meet the needs of a growing and aging population in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations, and new job openings are expected to increase by 20% through 2018.*

Work Environment: Medical records and health information technicians work in pleasant and comfortable offices. This is one of the few health-related occupations in which there is no direct hands-on patient care.

Medical records and health information technicians usually work a typical 40-hour week. Some overtime may be required. In health facilities that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, technicians may work day, evening, and night shifts. About 14 percent of technicians worked part-time in 2008.
